Showcasing Private Equity and Investing in Startups in Opportunity Zones

This event is the fourth gathering of ICF's working group about Opportunity Zones. The working group's members will discuss early stage venture capital and SME investments that can optimize their Opportunity Zones investment activity.

This Working Group session will showcase investors who are uniquely experienced in the merged field of non-real estate investments and opportunity zones. These investors include:

  • Vijar Kohli, co-Founder and Portfolio Manager at Golden Door Asset Management. They are best known for identifying technological efficiencies within their portfolio companies. Prior to founding Golden Door Asset Management, Vijar was a successful prime brokerage analyst at JPMorgan Chase managing capital structures and allocations of over $1 billion for a number of hedge funds. Vijar is a graduate of Seton Hall University with degrees in Accounting, Economics, and Finance, and studied at Princeton University.
  • Brian Phillips, Managing Partner, The Pearl Fund, the nation's first tax-free venture capital fund, with a focus on opportunity zones. Brian has been an early-stage entrepreneur, a global expert on economic development by using entrepreneurship, an advisor to Ivy League facility on how to convert their inventions into viable businesses, and an intrapreneur in several global organizations. As a founding CEO he has raised over $33M in venture capital. Mr. Phillips has been an advisor on entrepreneurship to global firms like Goldman Sachs, Wal-Mart, Coca-Cola, IBM and Arthur Young, as well as charitable organizations focused on entrepreneurship like the Aspen Institute, the Clinton Foundation, TechoServe and Endeavor Global.

What are Opportunity Zones?

Opportunity Zones have emerged as a transformative economic development tool, providing a new incentive to place much-needed capital into distressed communities. Opportunity Zones also offer investors opportunities to defer and/or reduce their tax liabilities when committing capital within designated areas. A helpful guide to Opportunity Zone investing is here.

The working group is open to new members. It is relevant to those investing in Opportunity Zones - or supporting such investment - including foundations, financial institutions, impact investing intermediaries, fund managers, investors, attorneys, advisors, and real estate developers.
